COMMISSIONING A MOSAIC

Mosaics are one of the oldest art forms, and the materials will stand up to the test of time. Feel free to choose an image for your space that you look forward to seeing everyday! The mosaic can be an addition to your tiled background, as a mosaic insert for your wall or floor. Most mosaics will outlive us, and crafting them with such detail means that they are more time intensive, and often cost more compared to other home renovations.

Our Process Step by Step

Cost

On average, a completed mosaic varies depending on the price of the tile, type of tile, and how intricate the overall design is. Generally I work with  ceramic or glass tiles, and different types of tile also affect the time taken and the price. The price is also affected by the size of the piece, as a larger piece needs more materials.  (*Do keep in mind that there are ways to work with a smaller budget, so I can usually come up with a price range that works for you.)

Step 1: Consultation

The process of commissioning a mosaic starts with a free consultation by email or through the contact me form. We will discuss the design you have in mind, size of the piece, and type of tiles. Based on these factors I will be able to give you a price range and an estimated deadline.

Step 2: Design

There is a $60 fee for 5 possible sketches of your design. Once you chose one of them, I create a full scale version, and get your go-ahead before I begin creating the piece.

Step 3: Tile Selection

Tiles can look different under different light, and I encourage clients to choose tiles themselves – either in person or online. If in person you have the option to get samples that you can take home and “try on” in your space prior to purchasing. If you choose it online, we can do the selection together, and I can guide you based on the look and feel you are interested in. Either way we both need to see it prior to purchasing, as some tiles may be similar but have a matte or glossy finish, and can alter the look of the entire piece. When selecting the tiles, we can also discuss suitable grout colours.

Step 4: Creation

While your project is being fabricated you are updated as often as you like with photos. Based on the way it is created, changes can be made at the beginning only.

Step 5: Pick up or Shipping

The advantage with mosaics is that it can be neatly packaged and sent anywhere. I personally package and ship your mosaic to you by registered mail or Fed Ex, or if you are in Ottawa I can bring it to you myself.

***This shipping cost is not included in the cost of the mosaic.

Final Step: Installation.

Although I don’t install your piece myself, I will give you the specifics on how to install the mosaic on whichever surface – a wall, wooden furniture etc – that you plan on placing it on. For floors it is best that you have a contractor install it to choose the best subflooring for you. The installation also includes the cost of the grout and actual grouting. You will also receive tips on how to keep it looking beautiful.

Payment

Costs are discussed throughout the entire process, and start with the design fee. Once you agree on the design I invoice for the first payment.  It is broken up into 2-4 payments based on the size, length of time to complete it, and the price of the materials.
